About Institute

In Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, there is a public medical school called King Edward Medical University (KEMU). The institution bears King Edward VII's name; it was established in 1860.

Lahore Medical School was founded under the British Raj and was given that name. The university replaced the pre-existing Antalkali Dispensary by adding Mayo Hospital as an associated hospital in 1871. The university established Lady Aitchison Hospital as a second teaching hospital in 1887, the same year the college joined University of the Punjab.

The university became the only medical college in the province upon Pakistan's independence, and in 2005 it was granted a charter to confer degrees on its own. Since then, it has undergone expansion, and now it is in charge of seven tertiary referral hospitals, among them the Lady Willingdon Hospital.

The fifth ranking of Pakistani higher education institutions was released by HEC in 2015. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has KEMU as the sixth-best medical university in Pakistan.

Final Words

Students with the greatest academic standing in Punjab are given admission to King Edward Medical University, and after initial screening, the list of chosen applicants is forwarded to the chairman of the Pakistan Medical Board for approval. The Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) exam results are added to the entry test results and Secondary School Certificate results to determine the merit for admission (SSC). Each year, a different percentage from each of these tests contributes to the overall merit. In September, there is an admission test. Foreign students and students with foreign examinations are selected for undergraduate seats based on tables that compare foreign examinations to the local HSSC examination.
Five years are needed to graduate. Following graduation, candidates do a one-year internship (house work) at Mayo Hospital or any other government hospital. Rotations among departments are granted to interns depending on merit. This merit is calculated using the grades earned on the final professional examination and all other professional examinations, less any exam failures. The medical and surgical specialties are the most competitive and only accept the top students from each graduating class. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council grants the full registration status of a doctor upon completion of the internship (PMDC).
